BMW i8

Exhibit Description

BMW designed the i8 in 2014 as a vision of what performance EVs could look like — and then the rest of the industry spent a decade catching up with the aesthetic. Its butterfly doors, laser headlights (the world's first production application), and carbon fibre passenger cell were science fiction translated directly into a production car. The plug-in hybrid powertrain was modest by today's standards. The design never will be.

Curator Note

The i8 is already a collector's piece — a car that was a concept that was a production car. Display it between the EV section and the supercar section, because it genuinely belongs in both.
