Porsche 917K (Le Mans)

Exhibit Description

The 917K is the reason Le Mans became legendary and the reason Steve McQueen made a film about it. With a 4.9L flat-12 engine producing 580 bhp, it hit over 240 mph on the Mulsanne Straight in 1971. It so thoroughly dominated Le Mans that the organisers had to change the rules to slow Porsche down. It also has the most terrifying cockpit of any race car that wasn't purpose-built to kill its driver.
