Land Rover Defender The original Defender ran from 1983 to 2016 with so few changes that late models were essentially identical to early ones — a 33-year run that speaks to either perfect design or stubbornness, and Land Rover fans consider both equally admirable. The current generation, launched 2020, is so thoroughly modernised that traditionalists were horrified. It then won every off-road test anyone threw at it. The outcome settled the argument.
